The Veil....the all important bridal accessory. With out it you're just a girl in a white dress, I think it's when you put it on that you start to look like a bride. As with everything else I have to try my hand at making mine. I've decided to go the vintage route with the very popular and attractive birdcage. In the first few months of my engagement I learned what a fascinator was and I'm going to try and make one of those too. I'm joining a rather large group of DIYers (these are pretty popular projects, wouldn't you say?) so I'm feeling confident.

Step one: read everything you can about making a birdcage veil. I googled it and found a few helpful tips. One site suggested using inexpensive tulle to practice with, very clever! They knew I wouldn't be able to get it on the first try! Another site told me that it's a good idea to have your bird cage veil not attached to your fascinator because after the ceremony you'll most likely want to remove the veil but keep your pretty fascinator. Another excellent point! That totally saved me. I can just picture myself day of wedding and realizing I had attached the two and would either have to rip them apart or wear the veil the whole time. I'd be reaching for those scissors so fast that veil would never have known what hit it. It would have been the Texas Veil Massacre.
After the proper research and development I decided to go with this tutorial. I bought a yard of tulle from Walmart but had to search around for proper clips. I ended up with some not so great ones from target. I don't feel like they are that sturdy so I'm on the look out for more. I guess since I haven't worn the clips around all day I really don't know how well they work, this is them.
The tutorial I used admits that it was a trial and error process and After following the directions I had to take the thread out and cut it down some and start over. On my second try this is what I have. Oh and btw it's black.
It looks like a hot mess. I know tulle is not as stiff as netting will be but I'm still a bit discouraged. I'm going to have to keep trying and perhaps look for a real tutorial with actual measurements, I don't really want to keep fiddling around. I want the real directions. Although, I do feel like I'm getting close it's just that the sides are poofy. Here it is worn on the back of my head.
And here it is worn on the side. It seems like the part over the face isn't long enough and there's too much bulk on the sides. Back to the drawing board!

Are you making your own veil? How do you feel about bird cage veils compared to a more traditional long veil?
